Lucky here too. I am close to the coast (Alabama) and the tornadoes have mostly been
North of here. I cannot imagine how tough it must be for those who have had two
tornadoes strike within a year. Here on the coast hurricanes Ivan and Katrina hitting
a year apart were bad, but if you are above the storm surge level, nothing like as
destructive as a tornado.

It seems that those living in tornado prone areas would have a root cellar or shelter. I guess cost would be the main hindrance. If bad weather was coming at night then sleeping in the shelter or basement would be prudent. One news cast interviewed a guy whose house was hit, he just rebuilt from a tornado 10 months ago. He was about to remove the temporary trailer, but the tornado picked it up and slammed it into the house instead.
I hate to hear the sad stories about kids and families killed and hurt. It's relieving to hear that in some towns that were destroyed that no one was hurt,,,,,guess they had and used their storm shelters.
The south and east has hurricanes
The north has blizzards
The west has earthquakes
The central states have tornadoes
And everywhere has fires and drought
It's good to plan for such things

I'm not sure how you would plan for volcanoes,,,,other than to not live near one,,,,which includes the super volcano under Yellowstone.
You can go underground for all the ones on my list except earthquakes,,,,but with volcanoes ya really wanna be hundreds of miles away....

There are certain types of disaster, where it seems it would be better to drive towards them, rather than away, to ensure a quick death, nuclear bombs and volcanoes may fall into this category - as you hear the 3 minute warning, watch out for that lunatic coming the other way it'll probably be me.

In Arkansas most schools have tornado shelters so folks living near can go when directed. Storm shelters are expensive but nice to have, The number one thing for all households to have is a weather radio with the automatic alert. Most folks that are injured in a tornado are those that did not see it coming in time to prepare!

Volcano preparations should include hotdogs and marshmellows
