lol....I know, I know....with over 5 million of these out there, most of us has one or has at least shot one in their life time. BUT MINE IS DIFFERENT! Like every one else who has customized theirs right? lol...Well, here's the story...... Short version....it's a standard carbine that originally had the less than stellar baby poo brown stained Birch wood stock. Uh....no thank you!! So I found a vintage Walnut stock for $20.00. Can't beat that!! Now, what's so special about that. Not a thing. But I was left with this UGLY Birch stock that has been taking up room in the locker. After looking at different custom after market stocks I had an Epiphany!! Hack up the old Birch stock!! Here's what I wound up with......
So...Next step...do I stain then rub it out, just oil and rub it out, get some aniline dye of some interesting color then clear coat it....What do ya'll think I should do for a finish? Did I just say "ya'll"???? lol |

Did you say you are going to "rub one out"? lol Cool trim job on it! I myself would just shoot some clearcoat over it and call it done ;) |

I have an old Marlin 25 bolt action that I reshaped the stock too. Added some finger grooves, a slight channel leading my finger to the trigger, tapered down the forward part then clearcoated the maple wood as is. Took all the blueing off and polished to a mirror finish then added some Thompson Center irons. Turned out pretty damn sexy. |

I'd check the law before I go posting pics...not 100% sure, but I'd be looking into over all length. Looks like your at about 26-28 inches. OTOH, really reminds me of that charger I've always wanted to make look like a pirate gun. |

Barrel length on rifle min = 16" OAL on rifle = 26" Charger is a 10" barrel pistol and must remain as such. A rifle stock placed on it would make it a SBR. If that barrel is 18.5" you should be ok as the grip and receiver add 8" min right? You gonna do any checkering?? |

Grip and receiver adds 11 inches. I have wanted to learn how to checker for years and have just shied away from it because I want a good quality checkering tool set, and they don't come cheap. I have it in my mind to make a tubular butt stock for this, but I mostly did this out of boredom yesterday evening. The birch stock won't take up nearly as much room in the locker now! lol |

extended mag release, yeah. I almost bought a Ruger Charger last year. Most 10/22 and charger stuff is interchangable. |

The 10[22 is a nice little gun, but the trigger pull leaves much to be desired. It will make your 1/2" groups go to 2". Had a local gunsmith rework mine, not as light as I would like, but a big improvment. |

I redone my stock and used an ebony color stain (minwax) and then used Formby'sŪ Tung Oil Finish (high gloss). I will post a pic once I get home but just using the Tung oil finish will produce some good results. BTW Formby's Tung oil finish is not the same as tung oil, The formby's stuff is really just a varnish and not really an oil... |
